A Little Simmer of Softness

Another reason I loved the urban landscape. From the last time I spent traveling in France in 2003. I was visiting a friend who lived in a little town about an hour south of Paris. I was waiting for her to get off work and to kill time I wandered around the little village where she worked making images in the encroaching twilight. I handheld my camera, purposely using a slow shutter speed to give the image a little simmer of softness. I was just looking for a sense of mystery. Black and white helps that and I love the grain the size of golf balls. I never got a chance to make a decent print of this in the darkroom, but as luck would have it, a friend of mine was starting up a custom printing business and offered several of Seattleā€™s finest black and white photographers a free large print to show off his skills as a printer. He then had a show of the work in his studio, and it has been said it was one of the finest shows of Seattle photographers ever. I still have the print in my archives and every time I stumble across it, I want to frame it and put it on a wall. Problem is, I am not sure I have a wall big enough. But it also makes me miss those days of film, of travel and simplifying the world in black and white.
